A classic French toast dish featuring rich custard-soaked bread, crispy edges, and a hint of Armagnac for added flavor.

Ingredients

Dairy

  • 0.5 cup whole milk
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream
  • 2 large eggs

Sugar & Sweeteners

  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Armagnac
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Bread

  • 2 slices batard (sliced 2-inches thick)

Frying & Topping

  • 2 tablespoons cultured unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon superfine sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

Instructions 

  • Whisk together milk, cream, eggs, sugar, Armagnac, and vanilla until smooth.
  • Soak bread slices in custard, cover, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Flip bread and sprinkle with flour-sugar mixture.
  • Heat butter in skillet over medium, fry bread until browned, then transfer to oven.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes until dark and crispy. Serve hot.

Notes

Ensure the sugar doesn't burn by keeping an eye during baking.
